"I couldn’t refuse the opportunity to do what I enjoy – as not just a hobby, but as my work." Dylan Jeffries | Junior Developer | Rhino Group

What drew you to the role at Rhino?

The role was originally advertised for more experienced developers, but the requirements matched my skillset very closely and included some technologies I had already been learning during my spare time, so I thought why not apply. After meeting with Dónal I couldn’t refuse the opportunity to do what I enjoy – as not just a hobby, but as my work.

How would you describe your job to a group of 5 year olds?

I make things for computers.

What motivates you in your career?

It’s a common answer among programmers and developers, but honestly it’s the satisfaction I get from solving problems, building tools, and seeing other people make use of them. I learn new techniques, get better at fixing issues, and ultimately improve what I do purely to achieve that feeling of usefulness.

What digital skill do you think everyone should learn?

Learn a little bit of Python. It’s a proper easy-to-learn programming language that removes most of the ugly complexity people usually associate with programming. You can build potent little programs in only a few lines of code and can make a wide variety of jobs much easier.

Outside of work, what are your interests / hobbies?

I follow a few different sports and enjoy watching a good Boxset. I’m very interested in aviation and space, to the point where I’ve logged over 1000 hours in Microsoft Flight Simulator!
Music-wise I’m big into stuff from the 50s and 60s, and spend a bit of time everyday playing some of my favourite music on my guitar.

Have you got a hidden talent?

I can draw the USA and its state lines from memory.

What 3 items would you take with you to a desert island…

• My bed
• My guitar
• A dartboard
