When and why did you start at Rhino?

I started on April 1st, 2016. (ironically April Fool’s Day, so I wasn’t sure if I got the job, or it was a cruel joke). It was an opportunity I couldn’t turn down.

At the time I’d finished college and was working as a waiter in a hotel in Manchester. I’d studied graphic design and my employers were aware that it was a stop gap before finding something that would help aid my career ambitions as a designer. When the opportunity arose, not only so close to home, but within an agency, it was too good an opportunity to pass up.

What’s the best thing you’re working on right now?

Email build. Normal process in relation to email communications for our clients, is often the studio design the creative, and once approved, the artwork files are transferred to our development team for build, and broadcast to the relevant audience.

However, we’re always looking at ways to streamline the internal processes and eliminate errors. As of late, not only have I been involved with the creative visuals, but I’ve also learned to code, specifically HTML, so that I can build the email campaigns too. Seeing my own progression, as well as having learnt a new skill that is transferrable to other projects, is really rewarding.

If you could pick up a new skill in an instant, what would it be?

Visual Effects. I think being able to create top end visual effects as you see in motion picture, and the ability to be able to bring things to life would be quite incredible. Alas, I have time to develop my skills on that front.

What are the toughest challenges you’ve faced at work?

Working in a design studio catering for multiple clients and events, often means we’re working to very strict deadlines. During the height of it, workload is often intense, with very short turn arounds. The team and I have set high expectations, not only for ourselves, but also the output, so it’s even more important to not let that slip when things are busy.

What upcoming technological innovation do you think will dramatically impact the industry in the next 5 years?

I think augmented reality would be a huge phenomenon. It’s difficult to predict, but AI in some way will take over the world, right?

How would you describe your job to a group of 5-year-olds?

I essentially create pretty pictures, every day, for a living.

What do you get up to at the weekends?

On a normal weekend, pre Covid, I’m often at the football with my dad. We’re huge Manchester United fans and have season tickets. Depending on the time of kick off we would get the train into town and have a couple of drinks before and after it.

Now that I think about it, my weekends are very football orientated; if we aren’t watching a game live, I’m often watching a game on the TV.

I do like to cook as well! Having more time to prep, means I can get a little more adventurous with the menu.

If you had to choose one car to drive for the rest of your life, what would you choose?

The Batmobile from Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy. 100%. No question.
