“Our strength is our people. If you have the right people in the right roles, you have a company with strength.”
Dave Stevenson, Chief Executive Officer. Rhino Group.
When and why did you join Rhino?
I joined “full time” in February 2018, but I’d been around the business for just over a year by then, and I’ve worked with Rhino on various projects for over 10 years.
What does being the CEO entail?
I always feel I should come up with something very profound or motivational when I’m asked this, but I see the role as a conductor of an orchestra. Bring together the best musicians and try to add a little bit of direction.
What do you enjoy most in your current role?
We’re adapting to market conditions that we’ve never experienced before and seeing how the whole organisation has just taken on every challenge has been an absolute joy to be part of.
What do you think are the biggest strengths of the company?
It’s always people. If you have the right people in the right roles, you have a company with strength.
What has been your biggest challenge in business, and how did you overcome it?
I think we may well be coming to the end of what has been the biggest challenge of my career, not just my time at Rhino. Covid has created obstacles and opportunities and I hope we’ve manged to deal with both of them. There’s still some time to go before we see a genuine recovery, or say we’ve completely overcome it; but we’re well placed, very positive and incredibly motivated.
Tell us about the hardest decision you’ve had to make so far.
Again, its always people. Its impossible not to make friends with the people you work with, and to see some of them have to go, particularly over the last 12 months has been tough.
If someone was to describe you using only one word, what do you hope it would be?
I struggled with this one, so we asked a few of my colleagues instead.
Turns out they couldn’t agree on just ONE, so we’ll settle for a few.
‘Focused’ ‘Astute’ ‘Visionary’.
What are your interests/hobbies?
I walk quite a bit, but everything else, interests and hobbies related, is about motorbikes and motorbike racing …. I bore everybody with it!
What 3 items would you bring on a desert island?
Assuming the family and dog were already there, it would definitely be the 3 most appropriate motorbikes for the island.
