"Every day is a new challenge, and that of course helps to keep my creativity at its optimum."

Steve Phillips, Senior Creative. Rhino Group.

Tell us a little bit about your role and the role of the Graphic Design team at Rhino?

I’ve been with Rhino for over 8 years, as a senior creative, with experience as an animator, illustrator, graphic designer and motion graphics specialist. I work closely with a great team in the Creative Studio, producing consistently amazing artwork, in all formats, from digital through to print. I take real pride in working alongside our account manager to take a brief from concept to completion, whilst also mentoring our junior designers.

What inspired you to pursue a career within marketing?

From an early age, I knew I wanted to become a creative designer or illustrator of some sort. I have always been an avid Marvel Comic book fan, and so the dream as a child was to illustrate for Marvel. Big dreams! Being creative is and always has been my forte, and over the years I have been lucky enough to work with some amazing designers, across the board.

What do you enjoy the most about your job?

I enjoy the variety of the work we do at Rhino, from automotive to fully bespoke corporate identity and animation projects. Every day is a new challenge, and that of course helps to keep my creativity at its optimum. The team at Rhino is a major plus; we are a tight unit and complement each other’s style and workflows.

What motivates you in your career?

I’m motivated by an ability to learn. I love to consume knowledge, knowing the benefit to both myself personally and professionally. I will consistently strive to be better, and it helps when I’m adding various strings to my bow.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Each day is different, and it’s that variety that keeps things interesting. I often start my day with a ‘task list’ with current progress, deadlines and requirements. I can be working on creating video presentations, onto a bespoke social media animation, which might lead to a new logo concept or creative signage. Sprinkle a few ‘Teams’ meetings in there, and we’re done.

What is the biggest professional challenge you have had to overcome?

The biggest professional challenge has really been adapting to the current climate of working from home, and not being able to see the team daily.

If you could switch roles with someone for a day, who would it be?

I would like to switch roles with Anna, our Account Manager. It would be interesting to coordinate and deal directly with our clients!

Can you give us a little insight into your passions outside of work?

I’m a big Marvel fan, lifelong Manchester City fan, technology geek, avid reader and most of all a Dad! Most of my spare time is spent with my daughter – nothing else can compare.

Tell us something interesting about yourself.

When I left college, I worked for a design company whose director was a previous employee of Disney! He was an illustrator who worked on Mulan, and in turn taught me the tricks of the trade in illustration!
